The Miniature Pinscher is a smaller version of the medium size German Pinscher (not the Doberman, which also may be partly derived from the German Pinscher). It originated in Germany perhaps as long ago as the late 1700s. It had no standard of conformation, however, until the organization of the Pinscher Klub in Germany in 1895. Its naturally hanging ears are cropped to be erect and its tail is docked. Its short, glossy coat is usually a solid reddish brown or black with rust or tan markings. According to the American Kennel Club, which recognized the breed in 1929, the ideal size is between 11 to 11.5” high at the shoulders. Such dogs should weigh from 8 to 10 lbs. Although it appears to be a scaled down version of the Doberman, the Miniature Pinscher was not bred from the larger counterpart. The ‘MinPin’ is an older breed, pre-dating the Doberman by at least 100 years. Similar in temperament, however, the Miniature Pinscher is also used as a watch dog.
